Items are the entire skill ceiling of Buckshot Roulette. The shotgun odds are fixed the moment the Dealer loads the shells — what separates players who survive from players who don't is squeezing maximum value out of every item on the table. This guide covers all 10 items: the 5 base-game items, the 4 added by the Double or Nothing update, and the multiplayer-only Jammer.

You can practice every base item right now in the free browser version of Buckshot Roulette.

The 5 Base Game Items

Magnifying Glass

Effect: Reveals the shell currently in the chamber.

The single most valuable item in the game when used correctly. A revealed live shell means a guaranteed safe hit on the Dealer (or a Hand Saw double hit). A revealed blank means a free extra turn by pointing the gun at yourself.

Use the Magnifying Glass when the remaining pool is closest to 50/50. If 3 of 4 remaining shells are live, you already know what to do — save the glass for a round where the information actually changes your decision.

Beer

Effect: Racks the shotgun and ejects the chambered shell.

Beer is a probability tool: ejecting a shell changes the composition of the pool. Best uses:

  • Eject a known live shell when you're at 1 HP and can't afford a coin flip.
  • Burn through a pool that's mostly live to reach the blanks you know are at the bottom.
  • Deny the Dealer a guaranteed live shell you revealed with the Magnifying Glass but can't capitalize on.

Don't drink Beer on a known blank — that blank was a free turn you just threw away.

Cigarette Pack

Effect: Restores 1 charge (health).

No decision depth: smoke when you're below full charges. The only mistake is hoarding cigarettes until you die with them unused. If you're at full health, they do nothing — use other items first and save cigarettes for after you take a hit.

Handcuffs

Effect: The Dealer skips their next turn.

Two turns in a row is enormous. The strongest patterns:

  • Cuffs + known live: shoot the Dealer, then shoot again on your bonus turn.
  • Cuffs + mostly-blank pool: take multiple free self-shots to burn through blanks and force the lives to surface on your turns, not the Dealer's.

Hand Saw

Effect: Saws the barrel off — the next shot deals 2 damage instead of 1.

The finisher. The Dealer typically has 2–4 charges, so a sawed-off live shell removes half their health bar in one pull. Only saw when you know the chambered shell is live (via Magnifying Glass, Burner Phone deduction, or pure shell counting). Sawing a blank wastes the item completely.

The 4 Double or Nothing Items

These items appear in the Steam version's Double or Nothing mode, added in the full release. The stakes are higher, the item pool is bigger, and runs can bank up to $70,000.

Burner Phone

Effect: Reveals a random shell somewhere further down the sequence.

Weaker than the Magnifying Glass turn-to-turn, but it builds a map of the future. Combine phone intel with shell counting and you'll often know the exact order of the last 2–3 shells in a round.

Expired Medicine

Effect: 40% chance to restore 2 charges — otherwise you lose 1.

A gamble by design. The rule of thumb: take it only when 1 extra charge doesn't save you anyway (i.e., you're desperate) or when you can afford the loss comfortably. At 1 HP, expired medicine is a 60% chance to kill yourself — cigarettes first, always.

Adrenaline

Effect: Steal one of the Dealer's items and use it immediately.

The value scales with what's on the Dealer's side of the table. Stealing a Hand Saw before the Dealer can use it on you is both offense and defense in one move. Note the "use it immediately" clause — you can't bank stolen items for later.

Inverter

Effect: Flips the chambered shell — live becomes blank, blank becomes live.

The mind-bender. Two clean plays:

  • Chamber is a known blank, Dealer is low: invert it into a live and shoot.
  • Chamber is a known live, you're low and must self-shoot: invert it into a blank and take the free turn.

Multiplayer Only: Jammer

Effect: Force a chosen player to skip their next turn.

Functionally the multiplayer version of Handcuffs, but you pick the target — which makes it a political tool as much as a tactical one. Jam the healthiest player at the table, or the one holding a Hand Saw. More in our multiplayer guide.

Item Priority Cheat Sheet

When multiple items are on the table and the turn matters, spend in this order:

  1. Information first (Magnifying Glass / Burner Phone) — decisions beat guesses
  2. Handcuffs — before an aggressive sequence, never as a dead turn
  3. Hand Saw — only on confirmed live shells
  4. Beer — to reshape a bad pool or deny a live shell
  5. Cigarettes — whenever damaged, before the round ends

The one rule that wins games

Items don't expire between turns, but they do expire between rounds. Ending a round with unused items is the most common mistake in Buckshot Roulette — an unspent Magnifying Glass is a decision you made blind for no reason. If the round is about to end, dump your consumables for whatever value they give.
