What the Free Version Gets You
The free version is not a crippled demo — it's the complete core experience: the full three-round run against the Dealer, all five base items, the same shell-counting decision game, the same industrial dread. That's the version that made the game famous in the first place; the itch.io original sold the Steam version, not the other way around.
For most casual players — especially anyone who mainly wants to understand what the internet is talking about, or practice the mechanics — the free version is genuinely enough. Our strategy guide applies 1:1.
What $2.99 Adds
Double or Nothing mode
The banner feature of the paid release. After beating the Dealer, you can take optional pills and re-enter the game as a repeatable, escalating gauntlet: randomized items and charges each round, winnings that double if you survive another three rounds, up to a $70,000 cap. It transforms a 20-minute one-shot into a replayable score-attack mode — this is where most of the Steam version's play hours live.
The expanded item pool
Double or Nothing adds the Burner Phone, Expired Medicine, Adrenaline, and Inverter — four items that roughly double the decision space. The Inverter alone (flip the chambered shell's type) creates plays the base game simply doesn't have. Full breakdown in the items guide.
Multiplayer
Added free in the October 31, 2024 update: up to 4 players at one table, plus the Jammer item. Turn order politics, alliance-of-convenience dynamics, and the pure chaos of a four-way shotgun standoff — covered in detail in our multiplayer guide. Multiplayer is Steam-only; it never came to itch.io and does not exist in web ports.
So, Worth It?
- Stay free if: you play in a browser (school/work machine, Chromebook, no install rights), you mainly want the core single-player experience, or you're still deciding if the game clicks for you.
- Buy Steam if: you've finished the free version and want more, you have friends to play with (multiplayer alone justifies $2.99), or you want Double or Nothing's replayable loop and achievements.
The honest math
At $2.99, the Steam version costs less than a coffee and funds an independent solo developer whose game sold 4 million copies on word of mouth.
